Nigeria Ranks Second Worst Nation in Electricity Supply

Nigeria Ranks Second Worst Nation in Electricity Supply

Recent Reports released by Spectator Index indicates that Nigeria ranks as the second worst nation in power supply out of the 137 countries examined in the report. This is due to the drop in power supplied across the nation down to 3,851MW.
In the report, the spectacle Index of the world’s electricity supply in 2017 stated that of all the 137 countries examined, Yemen ranked as the worst electricity supply nation in 2017. Nigeria follows as the second worst, so also does Hiati, Lebanon and Malawi respectively.
Although several Nigerians are aware of the current state of the power sector which is visible in the form of epileptic power supply across the nation, but they never expected the country to have performed this poorly relative to other nations. This should however send a message to those who are apparently at the helm of affairs, to immediately draft out a rescue plan for the country’s power sector.
Earlier, the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) had declared Nigeria’s infrastructure as “unfit for purpose”, coupled with the two national grid failures experienced within the first month of the new year which was due to disruption of gas supply, insufficient water reserves and poor transmission infrastructure. So it is eminent that this ranking puts icing on the cake.
According to the report;
“On January 14 2018, average power sent out was 3,851MWh/hour (down by 169MWh/h from the previous day). 1437.9MW was not generated due to unavailability of gas. 0MW was not generated due to unavailability of line infrastructure, while 680.5MW was not generated due to high frequency resulting from the unavailability of distribution infrastructure. 290MW was not generated due to unavailability of water.
“The power sector lost an estimated N1,121,000,000 on January 14, 2018, due to insufficient gas supply, distribution infrastructure, transmission infrastructure and water reserves.”
Other African countries were ahead of Nigeria in the ranking. Algeria was ranked 45, South Africa ranked 41, while Ethiopia occupied the 37th position among others.
